Who
are we?
We are a small group of avid field bred English Cocker Spaniel enthusiasts. Some of us are bird hunters, others are field triallers and others just love having these wonderful little dogs as part of our family. We are based in South Western Montana but have members from all over the North West including Washington and North Dakota. The goal of CECS is to promote the English Cocker Spaniel as a hunting dog. Since 2005 we have hosted an AKC sanctioned field trial each Fall.
Field Bred English Cocker Spaniels
English Cocker Spaniels, like their larger cousins English Springer Spaniels, originated in the British Isles where they were used for flushing and retrieving game. Cocker spaniels are the smallest flushing spaniels and Field bred English cockers weigh approximately 18-40lbs when fully grown. As well as the classic game birds such as pheasant, grouse, woodcock, snipe and partridge these little dogs are excellent rabbit or hare hunters. They also love water and can be used for waterfowl hunting, although their small size does make them less tolerant to cold than the larger retriever breeds. These days both English cockers and English springers have suffered a breed split; in other words there are field bred or working lines and there are also show or bench lines. Field bred dogs are bred primarily to hunt and are highly athletic, intelligent dogs that have an almost overwhelming desire to find game. English cockers are sometimes referred to as the clowns of the spaniel world and it does often seem that they are having a lot of fun at our expense! But hunting with a well trained English cocker can be a truly exhilarating experience.
